ROSWELL

IN CLASS EXERCISE

Name __________________________________________________

ARoswell@

This exercise has two goals: to introduce you to the concepts of finding information quickly and cheaply on the internet and help you assess the limits of information on the >net.

Pierre Cassetête, your extremely wealthy and eccentric client, wishes to sue the federal government for withholding information on the alleged flying saucer crash in Roswell, New Mexico and on its alleged activities in using alien technology (we will ignore questions of standing for the purposes of this exercise).  You are scheduled to meet with him tomorrow morning; before then you hope to establish 1) whether there is a likelihood that there really was a crash in Roswell 2) that the government actually may be using some kind of alien technology 3) that you might have a chance of forcing disclosures of some sort. You decide that you need the following:

1. Reliable background on Roswell, New Mexico and this crash

Identify at least one book, one government report, two scientific articles and two reliable articles in the popular press. If you find other useful information, indicate it.

2. Some information on the supposed use of alien technologies by the Government: what, where, when, why, how, who.

Identify at least one government report, three reliable articles in the popular press. How would you find copies of these in paper format, if available?

3. Some local experts to help you evaluate the credibility of the information you find for questions 1& 2. Indicate why you think they qualify as Aexperts@ in the field.

4. A map of Roswell, New Mexico (including someplace to stay for the night and a place to eat).

5. The name of at least one lawyer and one private investigator in or near Roswell who could be helpful to you.

6. Any information on whether anyone else has ever sued the government (successfully or unsuccessfully) in such a case. If such a lawsuit exists, who filed it, and what was (or is) the outcome? If unfavorable, any chance of an appeal?

For this question, find this information on the Internet, on either LEXIS or WESTLAW, and in the appropriate reporter, if any. Indicate what printed digest you use to find the reported case, if any. List any statutes mentioned in the case.
