Totalitarianism
"Orwellian thought" permeates a good deal of modern literature, film, and television. The image of totalitarian takeovers by human governments has spread from Orwell's influential 1984 (filmed in 1984 and starring John Hurt as Winston Smith and Richard Burton as O'Brien) into takeovers by computers (Colossus: The Forbin Project; War Games) to takeovers by alien beings (V, V: The Final Battle; Independence Day, The Midwich Cuckoos; Invasion of the Body Snatchers). Works by H. G. Wells such as War of the Worlds and The Time Machine seem now to have protended such developments. In many cases the takeovers are facilitated by the legal system, as in Orwell's work. In others, they are accomplished through technology and/or through superior force or intelligence.
