John Le Carre (Harold Bloom ed.; 1987)(Modern Critical Views). Includes studies of  The Honourable Schoolboy, the George Smiley novels, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Spy thrillers like le Carre's bridge the gap between crimes committed during national emergency and crimes committed by spies and cold war operatives. Works like The Spy Who Came in From the Cold examine the effects of "My country right or wrong" on the human psyche and spirit.

Meron, Theodor, Bloody Constraint: War and Chivalry in Shakespeare (1998). Shakespeare's works are full of acts necessitated by war, such as the hanging of a soldier in Henry V.
